The Reality of “Ignoring” Queries
The International Protection Office (IPO) explicitly states on its website that general queries or follow-ups regarding TRC renewals “will be ignored.” In any professional setting, ignoring stakeholders is a sign of systemic failure. For an asylum seeker, being told that their concerns will be met with silence—while their legal ID remains expired—is both disappointing and unprofessional.
Intentional Barriers through Delays
While the official site asks for 30 working days, the reality is a massive delay that acts as a functional barrier. By moving the process entirely online and refusing in-person visits at Lower Mount Street, the IPO has created a “digital wall.” This transition was supposed to make the process easier, but instead, it has made it easier for the office to ignore applicants without accountability.
The Broken Communication System
The current system is one-sided:
- No In-Person Access: Applicants are blocked from seeking help at the office.
- Ignored Emails: Follow-up emails are deleted or ignored by policy.
- No Direct Contact: There is no way to speak to a human being to resolve urgent issues.
The Proposed Solution: Open a Phone Line
If the IPO refuses to accept applicants in person to avoid crowds or administrative pressure, the professional alternative is not silence—it is communication. We demand the opening of a dedicated phone line for TRC renewals. If you cannot see us, you must at least hear us. Managing an ID system for thousands of people through a “no-reply” email system is a failure of governance that must be fixed immediately.
